Scoliosis causes improper spine curvature. An "S" or "C"-shaped spine can influence posture and alignment. Scoliosis usually begins in adolescence. Scoliosis causes, symptoms, and treatment:
Scoliosis has multiple possible causes:
- Idiopathic scoliosis, the most common, has no recognised cause.
- Vertebral defects cause congenital scoliosis.
- Cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy cause neuromuscular scoliosis.
- Spinal degeneration causes late-onset degenerative scoliosis.
Symptoms:
- Uneven shoulders, hips, or waistline.
- Prominent shoulder blade.
Diagnosis:
- Asymmetry during standard physical exams can indicate scoliosis.
- X-rays evaluate curvature and classify scoliosis.
Treatment and Management:
- Regular observation may be enough for moderate cases, especially if the curvature doesn't progress.
- Bracing may be indicated to reduce curvature advancement, especially in adolescents.
- Physical therapy: Muscle-strengthening and posture-improving exercises can reduce discomfort and maintain function.
